Domain Survey Observations, January 1995

• Percentage of hosts responding to a ping went down. This could be due to greater use of firewalls and larger numbers of temporary (dialup/isdn) Internet connections.
• 46% of all 2 letter .COM domain names have been registered.
• 17% of all 3 letter .COM domain names have been registered.
• www has risen to the top of the most popular host name list.
• The number of domains registered under COM, NET, and ORG approximately doubled from three months ago.
• A large number of domain servers now refuse to answer zone transfer queries (maybe a count next survey).
• Growth in number of networks used did not increase much compared to number of hosts.
• Still...No one has any clue how many users there are.
